help ! eggbound crisis !
 nsole]
randy has been helping me with my severely eggbound bantam cochin and sent me here for more help. i gave her a warm bath, vegetable oiled my finger and tried to push past the small prolapse to try and get around the egg, but i've never done this and i am panicked. it feels like the egg (a giant boulder is right there as soon as i enter the vent and it feels like there is a membrane between my finger and the egg. i'm not supposed to break that membrane am i ? she is complaining when i do this so i backed off but should i just cowgirl up and keep going even if she screams? i don't know how long she has been like this, but she smells very strongly of ammonia so i'm guessing it sghould have been caught days ago. i'm a terrible mother...i feel so guilty. can someone walk me thru this, please ?

OMG..a bantam..yikes..OK..keep up with the warm baths if the egg is that close..and add some epsom salts..make the water pretty warm. Keep applying the prep H too. You want to keep the swelling down. Now, greeze up and yes, cowgirl up..make a hook out of your finger..and i hope you have small fingers..if not use your pinky finger if you have too..i know this is rough and you're not a bad mommy..this happens. If you think you need to take a small syringe and shoot some oil into the vent the best you can..that will help too..try to go past the membrane and hook around that egg and gently pull it free. After that, if you can get it out without busting it i would flush her with warm water and epsom salt and then apply more prep H as she will swell. Try this for now and let me know the outcome..Good Luck!

okay....i'm going to go back in and try again. this hen is so hating me right now, she doesn't know i'm trying to help. this is awful. traumatic. got my syringe, my oil, my prep h, my pinky finger nail clipped as far down as it can go. i have some aspirin and tums mixed in a bit of water and gave her some amoxicillin earlier. wish me luck.

one more question...i shouldn't let her rest and try again in the morning, should i. we're both pretty exhausted. but if time is of the essence i'll need a cuppa coffee or nine.

OMG !! i'm such a miserable coward. i went and mixed a bit of prep h with the veggie oil and tried to stuff as much in the vent past the prolapse (and on the prolapse ) as i could--which wasn't much and then i wilted. maybe i should give the prep h a half hour or so to work, since she seems a lot more swollen now than when my oddyssey began hours ago. then i gues i should give her another bath before i try again--am i doing this right? i figured, what good is giving her the meds if they don't have a chance to work?
anyway... when i put my finger in again, i am going over the egg...should i be trying to get under it and then hook my finger upwards.? or am i going over the top of the egg and then hooking my finger down around it ? i've also figure out that i have a serious bug problem, which could be a contributing factor--am i right or is that unrelated? i put 4 drops of spot on (don't know what kind, the feed store guy sold it to me) and the bugs seem to be jumping ship. i have her under a red heat lamp and i can see them jumping off her and piling up on the paper towel under her. she passed a bit of poop when i greased her up, i hope that is a good sign. at least something's getting thru. so now i have the heebie jeebies from the bugs, i've been pooped on, and i'm having a nervous breakdown. thank you for being there. if you get tired and need to go, let me know, okay ???

no you're not a miserable coward..you're being too hard on yourself..you're right on track..do the bath and let the med work a bit..she's going to quite swollen for all this. I have found it easier to go under and out with the egg..but that's been the experiences i've had. I've not had to deal with a bantam either..just large fowl so you're a doll for having to do this. good thing you found the bugs too as that will cause some swelling with all this as they will be biting..and spot on is good stuff..now, just take a chill pill..cup a coffee and get back in there..you can do this! I'll wait on ya..not a big deal..good luck!
